I almost gave this four stars because 1. it lacks zhuyin entries, 2. there are a few typos/goofs and 3. it lacks enough pinyin learning tools. The overall strength and affordable price of this product make it deserve 4.5 stars without question, so I rounded up.

[Update 5/13/14: I had to come back and drop my rating down to a 4 star, which I have never done in my many years of Amazon purchases. The typos with the tone marks are increasing as I progress through the materials. Moreover, the end of chapter 5 quiz has vocabulary and grammar questions which are not introduced until chapters 6 and 7! Boo. I know how easy it is to make this kind of mistake as a classroom teacher, but that is why curriculum designers get paid so much more than teachers do. It is very frustrating for me as a learner when I come across questions that I am unable to answer even after going back and scouring the whole first half of the book!

Also, the website seems to have some issues where activities won't load properly on some of the chapters.]

I am a language teacher. I teach English to international students at an American university. I've seen more than my share of language learning materials through work and through my hobby of studying foreign languages. The Living Language set is really great! The online resources, CDs and multi-level books are very well designed.

My boyfriend is from Taiwan and I'm American. His parents don't speak English, so I'm learning Chinese to be able to communicate with them. Speaking and listening are more of my focus, but I still want to learn to read and write. Having studied Japanese before, I'm pleasantly surprised how much easier reading and writing is in Chinese!

Travel literature is the genre that made Bill Bryson famous. From his debut, The Lost Continent (1989), to Down Under (2000), the cerebral yet comedic author from Des Moines, Iowa helped resuscitate the travel narrative and take it mainstream. However, after the millennial publication of his romp around Australia, Bryson diversified, penning books about science (A Short History of Nearly Everything), his youth (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid), the Bard of Avon (Shakespeare), and everything from the spice trade (At Home) to baseball (One Summer).

My first Bryson read was A Walk in the Woods, giddily passed around my workplace, and hurriedly followed by the prequel to The Road to Little Dribbling: Notes from a Small Island – the book that made Bill a celebrity in Britain and supposedly outsold more than any other travelogue. Subsequently, I was hooked and devoured most of Bryson’s other efforts. Some of those efforts (e.g. Shakespeare) are outstanding, but it was the travel narratives that left the deepest impression.

Bill Bryson introduced me to travel literature, meaning that prior to A Walk in the Woods, I didn’t know the category existed. In an interview, Bryson intimated he liked Paul Theroux (whose Kingdom by the Sea may have inspired Notes from a Small Island) and Redmond O’Hanlon, so I read their books and the authors they liked and discovered a rich genre populated by talented and erudite writers. Bill Bryson also introduced me to a unique style: fluid yet humourous, informative yet entertaining, charmingly complimentary yet devastatingly critical. Once a fan who eagerly anticipated Bill’s newest release, I eventually discovered other wordsmiths and gave his last two efforts a miss.

Twenty years ago (yes, really!), Bill Bryson wrote the brilliant "Notes from a Small Island" about his travels around Great Britain. This is a sequel, of sorts, with Bryson again travelling around Britain and making observations. He explains in Chapter 1 that his plan was to travel between the two points that were the furtherest apart when separated by a straight line: Bognor Regis in the South and Cape Wrath in northernmost Scotland. Rather than follow the line religiously, he determined to use it as a rough guidance whilst visiting as many new places as he possibly could.

This is rubbish. In fact, Bryson veers all over the south of Britain, going as far west as Cornwall and Wales and as far east as Norfolk and East Anglia, and showing remarkably little interest in venturing north. Two thirds of the way through the book and he's only made it to Birmingham. Scotland gets a mere 12 pages of the total 381 (Wales gets 15). So really, he should have been honest about the fact that when he says Britain, what he really means is England. There is a map at the front of the book showing all sorts of places in Britain: it bears zero resemblance to the places that he actually visits.

The other thing that emerges - and I suspect the real reason for the lower English focus - is that rather than being one long piece of travel, this is a group of day trips and overnight trips, which are broken up by family events and trips to the US and various other commitments. If this was to be the approach, I wish Bryson had taken a bit more care in the planning. So often he turns up somewhere, realises it's Sunday and the museums are closed, and then gives up and leaves again.

This is #4 in David Baldacci's bestselling series about Will Robie, the hit man with a conscience. I had wondered how Baldacci could keep this kind of series going. His answer is to make it personal and go back to Robie's early days.

While a major hit by Robie is successful, the collateral damage of the death of a young girl by the same bullet is too emotional for Robie to take. He is not able to complete his next assignment where a young boy is in the same room as his target.

His controller tells him to take a break and get himself together again. At the same time, he tells him that his estranged father has been arrested for murder. Reluctantly Robie goes back to the small Mississippi town that he left over 20 years ago to find out what has happened. Robie has to face up to his past and the estranged father who physically and mentally abused him for so many years.

I enjoyed the first half of the book (3.5 stars) as Robie adjusts again to life in the small deep-south town he abandoned a long time ago. Many things have changed. His father is now a Judge, has remarried a beautiful woman around Robie's age and has a 3-year-old son (so Robie now has a stepmother and half-brother). He starts to come to grips with the past and tries to work out if he can help his father - the only way to get his father released is to find the actual murderer. But his father is not very enthusiastic about his help.

The second part of the book is basically a third-rate whodunit (2 stars). When his colleague Jessica Reel comes to help him the body count escalates. Robie and Reel discover more murders, blackmail, pedophilia, incest, and consanguinity. Of course along the way they get ambushed and chased by the baddies.

This is a review I never imagine posting. It actually pains me to write this about someone who had once been one of my favorite authors.

There was a time when David Baldacci was my second favorite author. He slowly dropped from #2 but remained in my top 5. Then he dropped somewhere between 6 and 10.

Now?

Now I sadly can state I’m close to giving up on him completely. His novels have become formulaic. Characters interchangeable. It almost feels like he uses the same template—and then just inserts whichever character. (Am I the only one who feels there no difference between King and Sean Maxwell and Will Robie?)

I will say that, for some reason, I never got into ‘The Camel Club’ series. That was okay, though because I loved John Puller as well as King and Maxwell and Robie and Reel. His standalones were…good. But even those always felt like it could have been one in a series.

Lately, the only novels of his I’ve enjoyed are the John Puller books. “The Forgotten,” which was the first Baldacci book I ever read, as well as ‘Zero Day’ and ‘The Escape’ were great novels.

However, the last several non-Puller books I came across were really struggles to get through.
First Family (K & M) was a big disappointment. The president’s family was so unbelievable the book was almost laughable. But I suffered through it cause…well, it’s Baldacci.

I read ‘Split Second,’ the first K & M book. I finished it mostly due to the fact it was interesting to see how K&M started out. The story, the plot and the writing was a bit of a struggle. But I read it cause…well, it’s Baldacci.

“The Innocent” was the first Will Robie novel. I found it awful, especially Robie’s sidekick who was 13 going on 35.

The beauty is the simplicity of magnificent human emotion.

‘Before Sunrise’ is not a film to be scrutinised, nor studied. The absolute beauty of it lies in its perfection as a simple love story – of two lives suddenly thrown together in the midst of reality, and the ensuing night of simple love that follows. Every individual at some time in life dreams of the connection that is portrayed in this film between Jesse and Celine, and few ever find it. ‘Before Sunrise’ simply and elegantly demonstrates how the most fundamental passions of human emotion can envelope two complete strangers. The beauty of this film is that the story is the most important element. The ending is both provocative and emotional – scenes of the night previously seen in darkness are now portrayed in lonely daylight as the sun rises and the story closes on these two characters. I saw this film by accident one night late on television. I have never forgotten it. So well is it made that the audience never question if this could ever really happen in life, reality being so absolutely characterised in it. ‘Before Sunrise’ is simply the story of two strangers bound in Vienna’s lonely night splendour – one night of love in all its glory, one superb piece of film making.
